Yalta

The coast's most glamorous resort, Yalta is one of the most fascinating cruise destinations throughout the Black Sea. It is often - and justly - compared to the French Riviera. This is where Russian Tzars and the 19th-century aristocrats had their summer or winter seaside palaces intended to rival those of Nice or Cannes. Yalta was originally a small fishing village, first being recorded by an Arab geographer in the 12th century as the Byzantine port of Jalita. In the 14th century it was known as the Genoese colony of Etalita. During the next century the Turks took over and retained control until it became Russian at the end of the 18th century.

The town came into its own as a seaside resort for the aristocracy when the Tzar built his Imperial Palace in Livadia in 1911. And at this same Palace, the memorable Yalta Conference of the heads of Governments of the three allied powers, the USSR , the USA and the UK was held in 1945. Yalta has long been an attraction for celebrities who enjoy its healthy climate. Many famed artists, musicians, writers and more recently politicians have sojourned here: Chekhov, Tolstoy, Gorky, Tchaikovsky, Chaliapin, Rachmaninoff, Mark Twain, Brezhnev and Gorbachev.
